When you think of your conscious what comes to mind? Is it your memories? Your happiness? Your pain? People have been struggling with this idea since the dawn of time and yet there is no clear answer as of now. Researchers today choose to focus on the neuronal correlates of consciousness (NCC). Meaning what part of the brain triggers in order for you to feel a sensation. Researches have found that not just neural tissue is needed to trigger sensations and feelings, the gray matter around the brain “lights up” and aids in generating feeling.
In class we watched “Your Brain: Perception Deception” where a prominent point laid in “overstimulation”. A question is asked, why cant we see everything? And the narrator responds that limited eye movement is needed in order to comprehend the world safety with the current human “hardware” in order to “see” everything our retinas would need to see everything in HD quality. And our brains would need to be almost 600 times bigger then they are on. And with vision being our “richest” sense our other senses would dull even further.
Another interesting fact that the video brings up is the fact that our brains fill in a lot of the information about the outside world. Right in the middle of our “point of view” is a blind spot that you don’t see as the brain fills in the void using a sample of the surrounding area. The video also brings up the point of what consciousness is. Some might describe it as the accumulation of all the sensory inputs, whereas others see it as being “awake” as opposed to being “asleep”.
An aspect of consciousness which wasn’t really covered in the the video was the concept of dreams. Which is a topic that I would like to do further research on. How do dreams play into consciousness. The concept of dreaming is almost like being conscience while your asleep, your seeing things visually, and experiencing them but they aren’t real. All in all consciousness is an interesting topic which our knowledge will continue to grow about.
